BK virus

Tom will be in the hospital a little longer - not sure how long. He looks really good and he's staying awake pretty much all day. Today, with the help of a physical therapist and a strong male nurse, he walked up a flight of stairs and back down. It wore him out but he did it. He's going to need a cane when he leaves.

The doctor thinks that Tom's body isn't responding to the steroids which are given to him to help with the GVHD - this is called steroid refractory. He's not sure yet but will probably know by tomorrow. If that's the case, Tom may need to be part of a clinical trial for a new medicine not yet approved by the FDA called Osiris. It's used to treat people who have acute GVHD and experiencing steroid refractory.

Also, he may have BK virus. This could be the cause of his bladder spasms. I don't know much about it but I'll find out more if the doctor confirms it:

I'm so confused. Information overload!

Instead of a cane, Tom should get a Segway. It would be good to do away with stairs anyway. Who needs them? Get Better, Tom! That's an order.
