Tom's employer has been so supportive and has gone out of their way to maintain Tom as an employee; three years is a very long time to keep Tom on board, reserving his position, and paying him 60% of his salary. Unfortunately that time is coming to an end. Tom was informed during a teleconference yesterday that if he isn't able to return to work by the end of the year then he will be let go...unemployed.
Tom's health is so unpredictable - he has tried returning to work on a couple of occasions in the past only to have to be put back on disability leave. I'm not so sure he will be returning. His employer will allow him to work only one day at home per week. That's a big step.
We have discussed the idea of voluntary foreclosure in order to sock away some money over the next few months. We have to prepare to live on my salary and HOPEFULLY social security for Tom - this means renting. It's just one of those downs in the "ups and downs of life". It will all work out. We've been through far worse situations than this.

Lisa,
Having worked with Tom in the past- his work ethic is amazing, and he fuels himself on creative productivity. I'm not seeing what you're seeing day to day, but I think Tom can handle going back to work and will thrive on it. I'm sorry to hear Tom's employer had to make that decision. Wishing you and Tom the best as he returns to the workforce and to better health. Perhaps going off the meds will restore some of his energy as well.

Dear Lisa and Tom, you don't know me but I am am ALL cancer patient, too, nearly finished with my two year treatment. There is no reason to continue beyond 2 years! I even wonder if my 2-year plan is even necessary. I do hope you are able to stop, with confidence. With compassion and empathy—Brandi (Lymphoblaster).
