In the hospital once again

As usual we arrived at the bone marrow clinic at 7:45am so Tom could receive his regular IV fluids. At 11:00am Tom underwent a minor outpatient procedure to do a biopsy inside his lungs. The culture was sent away to be tested for pneumonia. We don't yet know the results.

After that we were sent home. Tom was still in la-la land after being completely sedated for the biopsy. I went to our bedroom to take a nap while Tom napped on the couch reaching for imaginary things and having conversations with nobody (it was humorous). About 30 minutes later I went to check on him and saw him shivering, teeth chattering, and blankets pulled up to his chin. He was also sweating. He had a temperature of 100.8. Any fever above 100.5 requires me to report it to the BMT (bone marrow transplant) doctor on call. The doctor instructed me to take Tom to the hospital immediately - bypass the emergency room - and take him to the cancer/BMT unit.

Tom was admitted. He was SO sad. He looked at me and said, "I don't want to be here". After he was settled in he took my hand and said, "Lisa, I don't know how much more of this I can take". He asked me to bring his cross necklace - one he's had since he was a child - the next time I came back. Folks, let me tell you that scared me!

I left the hospital at 9pm, went home to pack some things, and went back. He has taken a sleeping pill and is out of it. I feel a little relief.

We're pulling for you, Tom! You just concentrate on getting your strength back and returning to being "you." Whatever you do, DON'T worry about Katie. We're delighted to have her staying with us, and we're having a ball. She's an incredible kid, but I'm sure you already know that. You should be very proud. I promise we're taking great care of her . . . washing her cell phone and breaking her glasses were just freak accidents - really!

Hi,
I had lunch with Chuck Konfrst today and he told me about Tom's recent hospital admission. I am so sorry. I can just imagine how hard it must be to have to go back there again to stay for a bit. I am pulling for you and hoping for a speedy recovery. You are all in my thoughts. Jay
